STS-133 Landing - Space Shuttle Discovery Completes Final Mission To Space

www.aresinstitute.org - Just before noon on Wednesday, March 9, space shuttle Discovery and its STS-133 crew returned safely to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Discovery and its six-astronaut crew spent 13 days in space. During their trip, they performed two space walks and delivered the Permanent Multipurpose Module, and the Express Logistics Carrier 4 (ELC4) to the station. This was Discovery's 39th and final flight to the complex, concluding an illustrious 27-year career. Throughout its tenure, Discovery spent 365 days in space, orbited Earth 5830 times and traveled 148221675 miles.

NASA Scary RTLS Launch Abort Simulation Space Shuttle Discovery STS-26 Practice

This was a simulation conducted by NASA's mission control and the astronauts of space shuttle Discovery before the flight of STS-26 which was the return to flight mission following the Challenger accident. They conducted many emergency simulations and practice countdowns, like they do for every launch. This simulation was carried over a satellite television feed, as was the normal practice back then. The video is footage of previous launches but the audio from flight controllers and the astronauts is the actual video of the simulation exercise. RTLS stands for "Return To Launch Site" abort and it's the most dangerous and risky type of abort that can occur if a main engine is lost early in the ascent. If the shuttle doesn't have the energy to reach a low orbit or land at one of the overseas emergency landing runways, the only options may be to either turn the shuttle around while it's still under power and fly back to Kennedy Space Center or ditch the orbiter in the ocean. During this simulation, they attempted to return to KSC but then lost all of the main engines and were forced to bail out of the orbiter over the Atlantic Ocean. Frightening, scary stuff even when it's just a simulation practice.

WHY NASA NEVER RETURNED TO THE MOON? PART 3 (APRIL 2011)

The most recently launched lunar orbiter is China's Chang'e 2, which was launched in early October 2010. China is also planning to land motorized rovers and collect samples in the Chang'e 3 and Chang'e 4 missions and return lunar soil samples by 2018.[44] Russia's Luna-Glob 1 expected to be launched in 2012. In 2007 the head of the Russian Space Agency announced plans to send cosmonauts to the Moon by 2025 and establish a permanent manned base there in 2027-2032.[45] ISRO, the Indian National Space agency, is planning a second version of Chandrayaan named Chandrayaan 2. According to former ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair, "The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) hopes to land two motorised rovers - one Indian and another Russian - on the Moon in 2013, as a part of its second Chandrayaan mission. The rover will be designed to move on wheels on the lunar surface, pick up samples of soil or rocks, do on-site chemical analysis and send the data to the mother-spacecraft Chandrayaan II, which will be orbiting above. Chandrayaan II will transmit the data to Earth." The payloads have already been finalized.[46][47] ISRO has mentioned that due to weight restrictions it will not be carrying any overseas payloads on this mission. The lander weight is projected to be 1250 kg, and the spacecraft will be launched by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. The Google Lunar X Prize competition offers a $20 million award for the first privately funded team to land a robotic ...

2008: Space Shuttle flight 123 (STS-124) Discovery/Kibo (NASA/JAXA)

Space Shuttle flight 123 (STS-124). Launch: May 31, 2008. Crew: Mark E. Kelly, Kenneth Ham, Karen L. Nyberg, Ronald J. Garan, Jr., Michael E. Fossum, Akihiko Hoshide Launching ISS Expedition 17 Crew: Gregory Chamitoff Landing ISS Expedition 17 Crew: Garrett Reisman This mission delivered the main section of the Japanese Kibo laboratory - Kibo is the Japanese word for 'Hope'. Kibo becomes the third science laboratory on the ISS after the US Destiny and European Columbus. At 14.8 tonnes and 11.2 metres long, the cylindrical laboratory section, the Japanese Pressurised Module (JPM), was too big for just one shuttle mission. The Japanese equipment to be installed in the lab - the Japanese Logistics Module (JLM) - arrived on a seperate shuttle flight earlier in 2008.

X-37b landing at Vandenberg air force base

2/3/2010 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The US Air Force's first unmanned re-entry spacecraft landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base at 1:16 am today. The X-37B, named Orbital Test Vehicle 1 (OTV-1), conducted on-orbit experiments for more than 220 days during its maiden voyage. It fired its orbital maneuver engine in low-earth orbit to perform an autonomous reentry before landing. The X-37B is the newest and most advanced re-entry spacecraft. Managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (AFRCO), the X-37B program performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies. "Today's landing culminates a successful mission based on close teamwork between the 30th Space Wing, Boeing and the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office," said Lt Col Troy Giese, X-37B program manager from the AFRCO. "We are very pleased that the program completed all the on-orbit objectives for the first mission." OTV-1's de-orbit and landing mark the transition from the on-orbit demonstration phase to a refurbishment phase for the program. The Air Force is preparing to launch the next X-37B, OTV-2, in Spring 2011 aboard an Atlas V booster.

1985 International Challenger Mission Team October 28, 2010 Abbreviated Version

STS-61-A (also known as D-1) was the 22nd Space Shuttle mission. It was a scientific Spacelab mission funded and controlled by West Germany - hence the non-NASA name of D-1 (for Deutschland 1). It was also the last successful mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger. STS-61-A holds the record for the largest crew, eight people, aboard any single spacecraft for the entire period from launch to landing. The Space Shuttle mission carried the NASA/ESA Spacelab module with 76 experiments, and was declared a success.[1] Payload operations were controlled from the German Space Operations Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany instead of the regular NASA centers.[2] Position Astronaut Commander Henry W.
